Monsters, Inc. beat the Live Earth ratings Saturday night. This is for the broadcast on the national, NBC, network, which consisted largely of replays of performances that had been shown on other channels throughout the night and day, including Sundance and the NBC-owned Bravo! The UK audience was not quite 1/3 the number who had watched the tribute to Princess Diana the previous weekend.
I managed to watch it the entire day, switching between channels, but was disappointed with the overall coverage. It just didn’t spend enough time on the actual acts people wanted to see, instead showing entire sets by virtual unknowns and up-and-comers. I also discussed the idea that the whole notion was hypocritical and lacked focus over on The OddBlog.
Still, over 19 million Americans did see at least some of the event and MSN says streaming video of the performances set new records over there. So I think the whole thing was a success, even if it wasn’t as big a success as promoters and organizers had hoped.
