On Heathers - A Review

Heathers was one of my favorite movies growing up. I watched it a few years back for the first time in many years and it definitely holds up well. Depending on how you categorize movies, Heathers could be a thriller, dramedy, dark comedy, or psychological horror. However you classify it, Heathers is a fantastic movie.

I saw a documentary on the making of the movie a few years back. It may have been an extra on the DVD but I don't remember. Anyway, the screenwriter was a bit of a nut who had apparently written a whopping mss of Biblical proportions and was ultimately disappointed in the final product. Heathers was widely considered a cult favorite, though it tanked at the box office. Daniel Waters also wrote The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, starring Andrew Dice Clay. None of the movies he ever wrote were ultimately that successful, leading me to wonder just how long his other screenplays were.

Heathers was all about the snappy dialogue. It added numerous phrases to the patois, including "Fuck me gently with a chainsaw" and "I love my dead, gay son!" Old people like myself still scream out these phrases at wholly inappropriate times simply to amuse ourselves. The third act is a jarring leap from the first two - the comedy dries up rather suddenly and it becomes a different movie - but, aside from that, Heathers is extremely well-written. It was also Winona Ryder's best showing and arguably Christian Slater's as well, despite the fact that Slater is literally doing a rather hack impression of Jack Nicholson.

Heathers is a must-see for every horror fan and should be seen by every fan of film.
