I was lucky to have a father who had a drum kit from his youth. I learned to play on that trapkit and still have it to this day (only for nostalgia - my dad actually kept it after I moved-out). However, musical instruments are unnecessarily cost-prohibitive, so I understand why so many parents would be looking to save a few bucks. Their sound is also dependent on their quality, which is why players have their favorite bassoon reeds and brands.
Players these days are lucky to have the Internet, where they can price-shop and even order more easily than we could in my day!
