[SPOILERS]
With Instinct, Smallville gave us a clever one-shot about an interplanetary wildcat, hell-bent on capturing Superman's heart. She saw his beacon (ahem) from space (AHEM!) and came a-running, as only Kryptonians are capable of withstanding her fair race's kiss.
Not only did this episode give us a nice, contained story to sink our teeth into, it managed to move the entire series forward without information dumps or dropping the story 45 minutes in to "get back to" continuity.
We see that Lois is quite smitten with Clark, and that he feels (at least close to) the same for her. It also deepened their relationship, forcing them both to face those feelings. But the "Queen" was no mere plot device - well, okay, maybe she was, but a really well-handled one - she reminded us that there are other races and worlds out there familiar with Krypton and its inhabitants and some of them may one day come a-calling.
