31 Days of Oscar

Yet another perfect example of my procrastination, I've been meaning to post about this for like two weeks now and just kept forgetting or would get ready to do it and start talking about something else...

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is showing Oscar-nominated movies all month long. And they've shown some doozies so far, so I can only imagine it's going to get better. I've watched Muppets Take Manhattan, The Big Chill, Silkwood, Starship Troopers, Starman, and a host of other great flicks. Every time something came on, I'd go to blog and tell everyone and then either see something more pressing in the news or get sidetracked or something.

Still, I guess it's already halfway finished, but they'll be re-airing some of the movies they've already shown in addition to new ones, I'm sure. This past weekend was a tribute to movies that had won or been nominated for Special Effects and I caught Starship Troopers. I had never seen the whole thing uncut, all the way through. I have to admit I liked it a lot more than I've said I did previously, even though I'd seen the whole thing in pieces at different times (the ending one night, the first 20 minutes another day, etc.).

I've never read the book, but the movie was spectacularly poorly-received when it came out and everyone who's ever read the book said it was nothing like it. I would hope not; the movie is a cliched space opera (but really not bad, like I say) and I think the book is by Vonnegut.

Anyway, the movies continue at least through the end of the month, so make sure you check out TCM.
