China Censors Pirates of the Caribbean

Remember the other day, when I talked about the censorship of the Internet, and mentioned how none of the countries or nations or whatever involved were big human rights nations? This is a good follow-up to that story:

China has made serious cuts to the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End movie which involved violence and horror, as well as scenes involving the Singapore pirate captain, Sao Feng. Chinese Internet forums criticized the image of Chow Yun-fat's character, who has long nails, is balding, and is dressed in Qing Dynasty-era clothing, as basically being a stereotype. Reports have said the cuts make the film hard to follow.

I mean, this is kind of a non-news item I felt compelled to add; is anyone really surprised by this? I've always been interested in China because of their history, culture, and mystery, but after watching a man run over by a tank on live TV, I have no respect for the nation, whatsoever, and this does not surprise me one bit.

Mind you, I don't want to fight them! See, that's the good thing about freedom of choice: I do not dispute their right to live as they choose, but I have the right not to respect their decisions if I do not agree with them, and censoring a Disney movie for horror and violence is just plain... well, Totalitarian doesn't quite capture it. It's just kind of bizarre in my estimation. But, having said that, I have not seen the film, so I have no real idea how rough it is. China did not allow the release of the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie due to cannibalism.

I mean... running down an unarmed man with a tank vs. Johnny Depp and a bunch of zombie pirates? Yeah, no real contest.

I'm just saying. You know?
