I was really a kid then - I mean, I was maybe a Freshman in highschool or possibly even younger - but when a little comic book ordering company I used (and to whose newsletter I subscribed) decided they were going to throw their hat into the direct-marketing ring, no one was really sure if it was just a poke in Dave Sim’s eye, or Diamond’s eye, or Bud Plant’s... or if they were serious about using their considerable force as one of the largest mail-order companies to distribute their own in-house titles.
At any rate, many, many moons ago, a little advance and back-issue ordering company by the name of New England Comics decided to publish a few issues of a small title called The Tick. No one really knew how to take it, but the art looked great. As much as I would have loved to order it, it was simply too much to afford. In the days of $0.75 comic books, here was one for a whopping $2 or $3.99 and for a kid without a job whose parents weren’t exactly thrilled with the roomful of comics he already had, it just didn’t happen.
I still have that newsletter, in fact, and the No. 2 lead is still barely visible beside the box for The Tick. That #1 issue is now worth approximately more than any of us are likely to see in written form on any check we are going to receive in the next year.
But here’s a second chance:
New England Comics is releasing The Tick Comic Con Extravaganza #1 and guess where you can get it? That’s right: our goodly sponsor, TFAW, has them for below cover price.
Seriously, even if you don’t really care for comedy or spoof comics, The Tick is well-worth the price of admission and no matter what you may think about “collectors,” this one’s almost bound to go through the roof.
HIGHLY SUGGESTED.
