One of our favorite BBCA shows is making its way to American audiences this primetime season!
ABC has picked-up David E. Kelley's adaptation of Life on Mars for the 2008 season. It's one of only two new shows greenlighted, the other being a game show put together by Ashton Kutcher.
As mentioned in the review of the original show I did a few years back on what used to be the other half of this fine pixel park, Life on Mars is a great show! BBCA showed the final series (season) this past late summer/early fall and I hate to say I missed most of them. One cool thing is that I often see an ad for a T-shirt on Facebook based on the series, so I knew it had more fans than just myself. Actually, sometime reader and commenter, SueJeff, also enjoyed the show and commented on it somewhere along the way a few times.
While TV shows ported from British hits are hit-and-miss (The Office is doing well; Coupling bombed harder than just about any other!), Life on Mars is a fantastic premise that has cracking dialogue, a hip period set, and is just plain fun. With David Kelley at the helm, you can rest-assured the zingers and snappy banter will fly as quickly as it did in the original.
The flip-side to this is that the original was so good, it's going to have to be incredible not to suffer by comparison. and there has been talk of Kelley abandoning the project!
Definitely a show to look forward to, just keep your everything crossed that it manages to be at least half as good as the original!
