Tuesday night, during the taping of his show, late-night talk show host, David Letterman, admitted to having engaged in extramarital affairs with several female staff members. Letterman made public his indiscretions because he claims someone attempted to extort $2 million from him over the matter.
According to Letterman, the matter was investigated by the Manhattan District Attorney. Letterman cooperated by writing a fake $2 million check and an arrest followed. The alleged extortionist has not been identified. A spokesperson for the DA's office refused comment.
Letterman said he testified in front of a grand jury but he did not say when these affairs took place. David Letterman and his long-time girlfriend married in March. The couple has a 6-year old son.

Robert Joel Halderman, a producer for CBS' news magazine, 48 Hours, has pleaded "not guilty" to a single charge of grand larceny. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.
Halderman used to live with Stephanie Birkitt, a 34-year old who works on David Letterman's show and has appeared on camera with him several times throughout the years. Birkitt moved to Manhattan last month. No one has established whether or not Birkitt had an affair with Letterman.
Prosecutors say Halderman was in debt and "desperate." He left a package containing the one page synopsis of a screenplay detailing Letterman's dalliances, as well as proof of the affairs - all of which are said to have happened prior to the talk show host's marriage this past March (some sources say before his son was born, which was 2003).
Letterman's attorney met with Halderman three times. He recorded the last two meetings and FBI agents listened-in. The lawyer cut the producer a phony $2 million check and he was arrested when he deposited it. Halderman's lawyer said there is "more to the story" than what we have heard, so far.
Letterman's son was once the target of a kidnapping plot in which the ransomers were to ask $5 million. The plot was foiled.
