Willie Maxine Perry, Tyler Perry's mother, died at age 64. Perry announced her death on his website Tuesday, but did not provide further details and those in the Perry camp are keeping mum.
Tyler Perry has said his titular character, Madea, is based (in part) on his mother and aunt, as well as many strong, maternal figures central to "[his] part of the African-American community." Critics have called his portrayal of Madea, as well as his work in general, stereotypical and damaging to black Americans.
