On Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The New Generation - A Review

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation was made when Renee Zellweger was young, hot as a firecracker, and still identifiably Caucasian. It also stars a youngish Matt McConaughey who apparently hasn't aged much over the years, only gotten more cut. Even these two young hotties can't save this film though.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is just crazy salad; the whole thing is a mess. The director's idea of "horror" is apparently to have everyone scream as loudly as they can while punching one another repeatedly. It's effective enough at times only because it's so loud and pointlessly violent for a prolonged period. The underlying concept is the same as that of "torture porn" and the resulting effect is similar - you just want to turn the damn thing off, or at least down. It plays as though the screenwriter (who also directed) read a primer on Psychology and just threw everything into the mix before seeking to justify some of the more outlandish nonsense.

Zellweger's character in particular goes from hysterical sobbing to comedic compliance too many times for the viewer to maintain suspension of disbelief. It's obvious that many of these moments were meant to be humorous but they rarely achieve it. One nice touch is that this version included Leatherface changing his mask and dressing up for dinner (scenes for this were shot but deleted from the original Tobe Hooper masterpiece).

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is pretty bad even for fans of the franchise. You can safely skip it.
