Guitarists like guitars - lots of guitars! Most of them collect guitars for various reasons, but by and large, each guitar has a different sound, and most of them are expensive. If you are just getting started though, you definitely want to get a cheap acoustic guitar because few people stick with it or take it to another level. I have several friends who like to grab their guitars after a few beers and just strum around, as well as a handful who are more serious.
