Piranha Remake
Apparently, a remake of Joe Dante's Piranha has been greenlighted. If you never saw this flick, you... well, I wouldn't say "missed out," but it's definitely one of the better B-raters. It's incredibly goofy and fantastic in the B-rater sense. The cool thing about it is how easily it lends itself to gaming - particularly for Dark Conspiracy or even Chill - it hits all the cliches at just the right heights. It has clandestine government agencies and programs; a mad scientist cloistered away in his secret, abandoned lab; a tepid love-triangle of sorts; a huge cast and tangled storylines that basically go nowhere; cheeseball dialogue and over-the-top hystrionics which pass for acting (barely) - the whole shebang. Great adventure material that can pretty much be lifted straight off the page.
Thing is that Piranha's already been remade - at least once. There were at least one or two movies and a TV special. I'm not sure if all of these were actual remakes or just rip-offs, but the original is a real treat. Joe Dante is a terrific bad director and when you watch the film, pay close attention to the underwater fishy shots: it's the same damn shot every time! Pretty hilarious, really.
The new version is being billed as a comedy-horror, but the original was supposed to be straight horror fare. It was just so bad, it was funny.
