Gere Apologizes for Shetty Kiss

Richard Gere has offered an apology to India for kissing Bollywood actress, Silpa Shetty, a day after a warrant was sworn out for the pair's arrest on public obscenity charges.

Gere had originally taken a stand against what he claims is,"...a very small right-wing, very conservative political party in India and they are the moral police in India..." adding that "...they do this kind of thing quite often."

Now, however, he has offered a sincere apology to the people of India, saying he misread Indian customs and never meant to offend anyone. He also added that he regretted any problems he caused Shetty and wanted the "media circus" to end.

I originally called this whole thing ridiculous. That was before I learned HE DIDN'T EVEN KISS HER ON THE MOUTH! Let me repeat that because we're talking a fine of up to $2000 and even possible jail time of up to 3 months for one or both stars!

RICHARD GERE DID NOT KISS SILPA SHETTY ON THE MOUTH!

He kissed her on the cheeks and dipped her and some dumbass Indian judge called it "highly sexually erotic." Now, if this judge finds that kiss "highly sexually erotic," she (the judge is female - go figure!) seriously needs to get laid. She's obviously so far removed from anything sexual or erotic that she can't tell the difference between a candle's flame and a bonfire.

I've never been to India and I never plan to go specifically because of this sort of behavior (they actually marched in the streets and burned Gere in effigy!), but if anyone has visited or resides in India, I'd really be interested to know how serious this whole thing is. I mean, is this more for the media attention to their customs and mores, or is this just a ploy by the lawyer(s) and judge involved to get personal attention for themselves and possibly boost their careers amongst this "small conservative" base?

Because this is effing stupid and every citizen in India should be ashamed by this debacle.

For those outside of India, you do realize they're nuclear, right? Think about that.

Please don’t spread misinformation. It’s a small town judge in a very large country. Chill guys. In a country of about a billion people and hundreds of towns and cities a few dozen people go out burning effigies on the streets of no more than four towns and the media there screams ‘ The Kiss that Shocked India ‘ or Jon Stewart on the Daily Show - ” Protests Rock India ”. Indians including Shilpa Shetty ( the actress in question ) didn’t care much about it. And please stop asking people to respect our conservative culture. We ain’t no Saudi Arabia. We gave the world the Kamasutra, the sculptures of Khajuraho, the raunchy Bollywood movies and the annual Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar ( scantier clothed models than those in Victoria’s Secret’s calendar )

Ha! THANK you, A. Nonymous.

I thought as much. The American media is particularly fond of creating mountains from molehills, so I honestly thought this whole thing would blow over, but it seemed to keep escalating.

I specifically did not mention The Kama-Sutra because that was going to be my big "Final Word" once this whole thing had played out to its bitter end.

Not to put words in anyone's mouth, are we then to understand that this really is a case of a few legal "eagles" basically milking an international story for all its worth?

Hell, people like that grow on trees here. In orchards.

Thanks for setting me straight, A.!
