Henry Rollins and Blogging

Henry Rollins opened his show tonight with something about blogging. I didn't really understand it. It seemed like he was alternately slamming bloggers while also excusing us. He hit upon how we could get up and go outside toward the end, but that really doesn't clear it up.

Mainly, he talked about how a lot of people seemed to be reinventing themselves online through blogs, but I don't see that much - meaning to say that if Rollins was suggesting that a lot of people are lying about their true feelings or lives in their blogs, I've found just the opposite. I think most of us are pretty honest about our feelings, outlooks, and lives through our blogs. However, he made a funny when he said something to the effect of, "College students taking time away from drunken orgies to post pictures of their... drunken orgies." So, if he means to say that we only post certain facets of our lives online, maybe doing so to consciously amplify that one (or select few) facets of ourselves, then I'd agree with that.

In general, if there's something I feel is too personal or that I don't really want just anyone to be able to find out or know about me, then I just won't mention it. Or I may kind of gloss it over - make sure the emphasis is on something else, like another concept, idea, or close sentence. Not to mention that I tend to blog about things that are in the news or can be independently verified or discovered (comics, writing, politics and current events, etc.); I don't have any solidly personal blogs in which I just talk about me or my life, even though I give my opinions on these subjects and that provides some insight into whom I am.

Either way, you have to remember that both Rollins and myself will sometimes take a more extreme position than we really feel for entertainment purposes or to make a point.
