Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and Nia Vardalos are suing Gold Circle for profits from the 2002 sleeper hit, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The suit alleges the film has made just under $300 million worldwide, even though other sources indicate it has pulled in more than $350 million. The suit alleges the company acted “willfully and maliciously” in withholding profits from the trio.
Vardalos co-wrote and starred in the family-friendly film, which was produced by the husband and wife team of Hanks and Wilson. The married couple “discovered” Vardalos and the story after seeing her one-woman play. The film was a smash-hit in theaters, then on PPV, and has since made its way to the small screen. In fact, it was showing just a few months back on ABC Family. A short-lived television series was based on the flick and also starred Vardalos.
Hanks and Vardalos are currently working on a new film in which Vardalos will star and Hanks will direct.
