A fire ravaged Universal Studios today, destroying the Courthouse Square featured in the Back to the Future films, as well as the King Kong attraction. While nearly 50,000 films were damaged, they were not irreplaceable, as copies exist elsewhere.
The fire was first reported around dawn and firefighters were reported to have been on-scene quickly. Helicopters dropped water on the flames that raged high and billowed a thick curtain of smoke. The blaze destroyed several sets, but aside from the few attractions, did far less damage than it could have.
Investigations into what caused the fire are ongoing, but it is believed a propane tank on a sound stage recently used for filming might have exploded.
