Organizers are hailing this year's Olympics as "glorious" and NBC demolished the other networks in ratings, but the 2008 Beijing Olympics were not without their share of controversy.
The beginning days, a Chinese citizen attacked and murdered one of the men's volleyball coaches and his wife. The coach died, the woman was put in critical care, and the attacker committed suicide. Then, the gold medalist Chinese women's gymnastics team came under scrutiny for being underage - a controversy which is still playing-out. And let us not forget that the opening ceremonies were lip-synched.
But Michael Phelps became the most-decorated Olympian of all-time, as well as breaking the record for most gold medals won in one Olympics. And more World Records were broken at this games than any other.
I really wanted to cover this more fully as they went on, but I was unfortunately unable to due to thoroughly crooked assholes in Decatur County, TN. However, I did manage to see a whole lot of the coverage and enjoyed (almost) every moment of it. I wish they had covered the Badminton matches more, as well as a few other games, but overall, I really enjoyed it as usual. And I loved the fact that I didn't really have to surf through every channel to find coverage. Sure, they spread them out, but the major networks managed to run most of the games, so it wasn't too bad.
Here's to two years from now and the Winter Olympics!
