Playwright and comic legend, Steve Martin, has offered to pay for a school production of his play, Picasso, to be performed off-campus. Picasso is about a chance encounter between Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein, in which the two debate the merits of art and science. Martin decided to step-in and fund the performance himself, after 137 parents signed a petition against the play.
Martin says, "The play has been performed, without incident, all over the world by professional and amateur companies, including many high schools," and that he is supporting the performance because he does not want Picasso "acquiring a reputation it does not deserve."
Funds are being raised to put the play on at nearby Eastern Oregon University. Whatever is left over from Steve Martin's donation will go towards acting scholarships for students.
Oregon has been busy in the censorship game, as late. Check out Weird Ink for all their book bannings. Today is Albert Einstein's birthday.
