Despite the fact that Piranha 3D opened at #6 and only brought $10 million, a sequel is already in the works. The movie only cost $24 million to make and is expected to bring-in close to $30 million before it even goes to DVD/VoD, making it an unqualified success. Further, both critics and audience members give it good reviews, even while granting that Piranha 3D is exactly what it sounds like: Gratuitous on every level, in every category.
Piranha 3D is a remake of Joe Dante's 1978 original Piranha, which is actually a decent flick, all things considered. As I've observed before, Piranha (1978) could well have been a tabletop RPG adventure module for any number of games -- and a good one, at that! And while I have not seen the 3D remake, of all the 3D movies to come out recently, Piranha is one that actually fits the bill.
I'd love to hear from anyone who's seen it, so please leave me a comment and let me know what you thought!
