No More Noodles

Momofuku Ando, creator of the infamous Cup O Noodles so many of us grew up on - and are still eating more than once a week - died the other day. He was 96, so he certainly got the chance to prosper from his work.

Cup O Noodles became a worldwide sensation which has lasted to this day, thanks to its taste and ease of preparation. But it's true secret lay in its low, low, everyday price. College students, starving artists, struggling musicians, and crackheads with kids all agree: Cup O Noodles is the choice snack for really poor people. All of these varied peoples can also affirm that the powdered mix is good for use in any recipe which involves only cheap noodles and nothing more. The waterproofed cup, ease of use, low cost, and intrinsic inability to be useful as separate ingredients in any other recipe may not have made Momofuku a household name, but it did make his invention a worldwide phenomenon.

And if you're going to make one big contribution to society, tasty, easy-to-make, cheap food is a pretty darned important one.

That is too bad. My girls loved the cup of noodles growing up. I thought they were pretty good also. Well, unlike Momofuku Ando, who will no longer be around, his "cup of noodles" will be.
