Donor Game Show a Hoax

The Netherlands television had come under fire over the last few weeks when the world learned of plans for a new reality TV game show entitled, The Big Donor Show. The premise was that a dying woman would choose between three contestants who need kidney transplants. The "winner" would then receive the dying woman's kidney. People across the world considered the show to be in very poor taste and some Dutch politicians did not want it to air because they were afraid of the negative publicity for the country. According to one survey, 75% of TV viewers said they would not watch the show.

But an hour into the show, the announcer admitted the whole thing was a hoax meant to raise awareness of the situation. The founder of the network, BNN, died two years ago from kidney failure. He had been on a waiting list for a kidney transplant.

The proposed donor was actually an actress. The three contestants were not; they are actual people on a waiting list for a new kidney. All three were aware of the hoax and went along with it in order to raise awareness of the issue.

Following the show, many who had originally opposed it praised it for having accomplished its goal...
