SFX guru, Stan Winston, has died at 62.
Winston is one of the few behind-the-scenes workers whose name is basically a household word. He oversaw the special effects of such blockbusters as Terminator, Aliens, and even Iron Man, and won Oscars for many of them - he was nominated 10 times. He had been fighting multiple myeloma for years.
This summer alone, Stan Winston Studios' work can be seen in three major releases: Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Don't Mess with the Zohan. His namesake studio will also work on the upcoming Terminator 4, Avatar, and G.I. Joe.
While most well-known for his SFX creations featured in horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films, Winston also worked in numerous other films and capacities, even winning Emmies for some of his non-fantastic work.
Winston was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2001.
