Saw is now the top-grossing horror franchise of all time, beating-out such classics as Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. The franchise is just a little over $1 million shy of the record set by the aforementioned Friday the 13th series and is expected to exceed that amount this week. Its take this weekend sent it soaring past the Halloween movies.
However, some critics note the scales are tipped in Saw's favor, as ticket prices are nearly 5x what they were in the 1970s and '80s and there are nearly 40 million more teenagers in the US alone!
Still, Saw (like Halloween and Friday the 13th) was made for a fraction of its returns. Is it the biggest-grossing horror franchise of all time? Maybe, maybe not, but it is definitely in the top three. And the new VH1 reality show, Scream Queens, is already working on casting the next installment.
